1. Wander around Siena

Soak up a little of the heart of Siena by strolling through its stunning Piazza del Campo. This sloping square is an artistic masterpiece in itself and is also where the city’s 17 districts battle it out in the famous horse race, Palio di Siena.

2. Explore the town of Lucca

Spend a day indulging in some history in the beautiful Tuscan town of Lucca, famed for its Renaissance city walls that have survived intact when so many others have crumbled. Be sure to check out the Piazza della Anfiteatro, a large circular piazza that was once the site of the city’s Roman amphitheatre.

3. Visit the duomo

Take in the majesty of Florence’s imposing Gothic cathedral, built on the site of a 7thCentury church whose remains you can still see in the crypt. The clock above the entrance was designed in 1443 in accordance with the 24th hour of each day ending at sunset! Also be sure to climb to the top of the ‘Cupola’, the duomo’s Renaissance dome.

4. Go on a museum hopping

Since July 2014 many State museums across Italy are now free to enter on the first Sunday of each month which gives you the perfect chance to visit the world-renowned Uffizi Gallery in Florence. Originally built in 1581 it houses some of the globe’s greatest masterpieces including works by Botticelli, Raphael and Michelangelo.

5. Enjoy some amazing festivals

Florence has a brilliant programme of free events to take advantage of throughout the year, from its annual Design Week to children’s festivals, garden delights and Feast Days.

6. Visit the famed Leaning Tower of Pisa

Pisa’s Torre Pendente may be overrated but this gem is still so worthy for a visit. Create the most unique pose you can do with the tower as what other tourists are doing.

7. Sample free wines in the Chianti region

Chianti region is located between Florence and Siena and it is where the fine wines in Tuscany can be found. Driving through the rolling hills, vineyards, medieval villages, castles and walled towns is a treat itself but wait till you taste the amazing delicious wines offered by the many wine-makers as free tastings.

8. Explore the village of San Gimignano

Drive 35 miles south of Florence and get amazed by the ancient Etruscan village San Gimignano dubbed as the “city of beautiful towers.” The view of 15 towers towering over the rural setting is so beautiful it got awarded World Heritage status.

9. Drop by Siena’s National History Museum

The city’s National History is Museum is free for everyone, famous for its ornithology collection.

10. Visit Basilica di San Francesco

It is the beautiful crowning glory of Assisi where St. Francis is laid to rest. You can also find some of Italy’s most celebrated masterpieces inside the Basilica Superiore like a series of 28 frescoes depicting St. Francis’ life.
