About the film:
Part film, part baptism, Black Mother director Khalik Allah brings us on a spiritual odyssey through Jamaica. Soaking up its bustling metropolises and tranquil countryside, Allah introduces us to a succession of vividly rendered souls who call this island home. Their candid testimonies create a polyphonic symphony, set against a visual prayer of indelible portraiture. Immersed into the sacred, the profane, and everything in-between, Black Mother channels rebellion and reverence into a deeply personal ode informed by Jamaica’s turbulent history and the urgent present.
Hugo ran away from the cartel violence in Guerrero, Mexico. As he watches whales swimming in the cold sea of Baja California Norte, he narrates how his 14 year old brother was brutally murdered. At only 16 years old, Hugo is burdened by profound sadness but is driven by the desire to cross the wall and reunite with his father – the only remaining member of his family.
